Punters impressed by Brown's banking plan
Gordon Brown's response to the banking crisis has resulted in an increase in the number of punters backing Labour to win the Glenrothes by-election.

Labour is defending a majority of more than 10,000 in the constituency, but its electoral performance since Mr Brown moved into Number Ten has been so poor that the Scottish National Party (SNP) has emerged as the firm favourite to take the seat.

Peter Grant, the SNP candidate, is currently best-priced at 2/5 with Coral to win the November 6th contest.

However, the price for a victory for Labour's Lindsay Roy has been cut from 3/1 to 2/1 at William Hill in recent days.

Graham Sharpe, spokesman for the bookmaker, said the move could be explained by the prime minister's handling of the economic crisis.

"Punters seem to believe he has only enhanced his personal standing during the last week or so - and that has been reflected in the odds about Mr Brown himself and Labour," he explained.

The Conservatives remain 2/7 favourites at William Hill to win the next general election, with Labour best-priced at 3/1 with Coral.
