Johnson confirms Borthwick as England skipper
Steve Borthwick will retain the England captaincy for the time being, manager Martin Johnson has confirmed.

Having replaced the injured Phil Vickery as skipper during the summer tour of New Zealand, Borthwick will continue to lead the side because the Wasps prop is not guaranteed a place in Johnson's starting line-up.

"Like Phil, Steve is a good leader and always prepares thoroughly for all his matches at club and international level … I'm looking forward to working with him," the manager said yesterday.

Commenting on Borthwick's selection, William Hill spokesperson Rupert Adams described the Saracens player as a "solid choice" but revealed that the bookmaker has not altered its odds on next year's Six Nations.

France remain favourites at 2/1, with England 9/4, Wales 3/1 and Ireland 10/3.

"The Six Nations will be very close this time round, with four genuine contenders for the title," Mr Adams said.

The tournament begins on February 7th, when England face Italy and Ireland entertain France.
